Río Claro, history imprinted on its stones

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

The Río Claro basin narrates its history since time immemorial through the stones and the species that inhabit it. It is a very diverse and unique territory that has undergone many changes and invites us to reflect on life on our planet and our role in it.

This region is characterized by hosting a great diversity of animal and plant species, many of them endemic to Magdalena Medio (i.e. exclusive to this area). This happens because the geographic characteristics of the site have isolated the different populations of other areas, allowing them to adapt perfectly to their environment and develop unique traits generation after generation. In the country, 58 centers of endemism have been identified, and Río Claro is part of one of them called Nechí - Nare.

It is estimated that in the area it is possible to find about 100 species of mammals, 350 of birds, 70 of reptiles, 45 of amphibians, 50 of fish, besides abundant species of insects and invertebrates. Many of these are in the process of extinction due to deforestation and habitat destruction. Among them are several endemic species, such as the Mico Titi, the Paujil, Torito and Catrappie birds, the Bocachico fish and the Patalo fish. In addition, during the 20th century, several large mammals such as the jaguar and the danta became extinct in the region because of indiscriminate hunting.

In addition to the above, this area has great importance thanks to the fact that it presents very particular geological phenomena. The Claro River basin has undergone many changes that have led it to have unique characteristics and very relevant to the region's wealth. Long ago it was a shallow coast, bordered by a coral reef. It is also possible to observe the dynamics of the Palestine fault and its predecessors, which left multiple folds with unusual shapes between the marble walls. In addition, from geological and biological processes derived from the river basin, different formations such as marble slopes, cliffs, caverns, stalactites, stalagmites and hillsides originated. These characteristics allow forests to grow on very particular soil conditions leading to very diverse life forms.

This wonderful and unique ecosystem allows you to have a vivid experience of how the Earth works. It allows us to recognize that we inhabit a living and changing planet, of which we are children. Let's take care so that this cannon can continue to tell the history of its territory in its own way!
